Key Visa Subclasses in the Skilled Migration Program
Skilled Independent Subclass 189
This visa is a permanent residency option for individuals who do not require sponsorship from a relative or state government. It allows skilled workers to live and work anywhere in Australia without restrictions.
Skilled Nominated Subclass 190
The Subclass 190 visa is a permanent visa for skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian state or territory government. It offers a faster route to permanent residency but requires the applicant to live and work in the nominating state for a certain period.
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Subclass 491
This provisional visa requires state or territory nomination or sponsorship by an eligible family member living in a designated regional area. It allows you to live and work in regional Australia for up to five years, with a pathway to permanent residency through the Subclass 191 visa.
The Application Process
The Skilled Migration application process involves three essential steps:
1. Skill Assessment
The first step in applying for Australian Skilled Migration is to have your skills assessed by a relevant skills assessing authority. The assessment confirms if your qualifications and experience meet the standards required for an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL). You can view the official list on the Department of Home Affairs website here:
https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/working-in-australia/skill-occupation-list.
You must complete this step before submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI).
Once you receive a positive skill assessment, the next step is to submit an EOI through SkillSelect. This step enables the Department of Home Affairs to invite you to apply for a visa. For Subclass 190 and 491 visas, you may also need to apply for state nomination.
3. Migration Application
After receiving an invitation to apply from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP), you can submit your formal visa application. This submission will include your skill assessment, proof of English proficiency, work experience evidence, and other necessary documents.
Points Table for Australian Skilled Migration
To apply for a skilled visa, you need to score a minimum of 65 points based on several factors, including age, English proficiency, work experience, education, and more. Below is the points table that determines your eligibility.
